Kuhnheimâs critique here could well be levelled at the images on display in The New Barbarians, since the images of the barbarous bodies as simultaneously pleasurable and erotic have a long history in European definitions of the indigenous American other, from early figurations of indigenous women as Amazons and onwards.20 Regarding this long history, scholars such as Anne McClintock have argued that the colonial gaze was a type of âporno-tropicsâ in which women functioned as âimperial boundary markersâ (McClintock 1995:25), while Fernanda Peñaloza has discussed how the portrayal of indigenous women as âhighly eroticised object[s] performing for the benefit of male pleasureâ is part of âlarger tropes of territorial conquestâ (Peñaloza 2010:470). In this light, the question therefore remains of whether Gómez-Peñaâs work ends up reexoticising the Chicana body. Undoubtedly the intent of Gómez-Peñaâs playing with these images is to question their validity, in the same way in which Alaimo, in her discussion of âBorder Brujoâ has argued that the very hyperabundance of Mexican and Mexican American characters is a deconstructive strategy which âallows it to resist reification, commodification, and epistemologies of controlâ (Alaimo 2000:178). That said, in The New Barbarians, it remains to be seen whether such hyperabundance is enough, or whether it ends up reinforcing stereotypes of barbarous/erotic female bodies.
